| Tuesday, 17 December, 2002, 13:01 GMT Kenya 'ready' for power transfer ![]() Moi steps down on 5 January A committee has been formed in Kenya to oversee the transition of power after the presidential election in 10 days' time. Opposition leaders have been seeking clarification of how the handover of power would be conducted when President Daniel arap Moi steps down after 24 years in power.
The ruling Kanu party has ruled the country ever since the country gained independence 39 years ago. In a recent speech, President Moi promised that he would hand over power to whoever wins the poll. Transition The committee is to be made up of Mr Wako, Public Service head Sally Kosgei and Chief Justice Bernard Chunga. Opinion polls suggest the opposition are favourites to triumph in the 27 December general elections.
Uhuru Kenyatta, the son of Kenya's founding president, Jomo Kenyatta, has been chosen as Kanu's candidate after being backed by Mr Moi. Mwai Kibaki is standing for the main opposition alliance, Narc, which was joined by many senior Kanu members, opposed to Mr Kenyatta. Meanwhile, Kanu has denied allegations that it has been looting Treasury funds to finance its election campaign. The Daily Nation newspaper reported suspicion over a recent Treasury decision to release about $50 million dollars to contractors to settle bills - saying this could be used to fund the Kanu campaign. |
