| Monday, 9 December, 2002, 11:50 GMT Boost for Kenyan opposition ![]() Kibaki's deputy is also in a London hospital Kenyan President, Daniel arap Moi, has visited two opposition leaders in their London hospital. National Rainbow Coalition (Narc) leader Mwai Kibaki will presumably be further helped in his recovery by the results of an opinion poll, which predicts a landslide victory in this month's election.
Mr Moi is barred from standing after 24 years in power. His nomination of Mr Kenyatta, son of Kenya's founding president Jomo Kenyatta, split Kanu, with many senior members leaving and helping to establish Narc. Gout Mr Kibaki,71, was injured in a car crash while campaigning in Kenya a week ago. His running-mate Michael Wamalwa was taken ill with gout while visiting Mr Kibaki and joined him at the private Wellington Hospital in London.
Kenyan newspaper, The Daily Nation, reports that the president wished his rival a speedy recovery and said: "Only God knows what is in store for tomorrow." Mr Moi defeated Mr Kibaki in elections in 1992 and 1997. Some 3,000 Kenyans from all eight provinces took part in the opinion poll. The IRI says the margin of error is less than 2%. The BBC's Ishbel Matheson in Nairobi says the opinion poll indicates an extraordinary turnaround in a country which has been ruled by Kanu since independence. Mr Moi is famed for his Machiavellian political skills, but it seems in his choice of successor he has miscalculated badly. Our correspondent says that many Kenyans see Uhuru Kenyatta as too young, too inexperienced and too dependent on the powerful clique which has brought Kenya to the brink of ruin. |
