Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels have killed six people in an attack on a United Nations-run refugee camp in north-western Uganda.

Between 50 and 200 LRA rebels burnt more than 100 houses, as well as part of a school and a mill, before looting the camp's dispensary, said the UN refugee agency, UNHCR.

The rebels also attacked a Ugandan army settlement nearby, killing one soldier and burning down a number of army structures.

The LRA has been fighting President Museveni's government for 15 years.

A high-profile joint military operation against their bases in southern Sudan earlier this year has only pushed some of their fighters further into Uganda.

The attack, in Adjumani district, about 500 km from the capital, Kampala, was well outside the normal area of operation of the LRA, UN officials said.

Teachers abducted

Most of the attacks had taken place in the Gulu area and near Uganda's northern border with Sudan.

The raids by the rebels are the latest in a series of attacks which have left about 40 people dead in recent weeks.

These attacks have caused hundreds of thousands of people to flee the camps for displaced people where they had sought refuge from the fighting.

On Monday, three teachers were abducted and a pupil killed in an attack by the LRA on Iceme girls' school in northern Uganda.

The rebels also abducted 55 people in a raid on a nearby primary school.

The mission and school attacks followed an attack by the LRA on a military convoy on the Gulu-Lira road last Saturday.

An army major and his two escorts were killed, according to an army spokesman.
