Merger plan splits Kenya's ruling party

President Moi has his eye on the next election
Three members of Kenya's governing Kanu party have taken their leaders to court, challenging a proposed merger with the National Development Party.

The three, Samuel Kinyanjui, Francis Karani and John Ngige, say the plan violates their constitutional rights, because more than 50,000 long-serving "life members" of Kanu have not been consulted.

The merger is part of Kanu's strategy to front a formidable team in the general elections, scheduled for later this year.

The proposal has led to bitter differences within Kanu. Some party diehards argue that the merger is unfair to many Kanu supporters who have been loyal for many years.

Instead of rewarding the NDP leader, Raila Odinga, with a top Kanu post, they argue that the opportunity should be given to long-serving members. But other Kanu leaders describe Raila Odinga as prodigal son who has returned home and deserves to be rewarded.

Top jobs

When the two parties meet next Monday President Moi is assured of remaining chairman of the new, merged movement.

The real battle will between several cabinet ministers and senior politicians who are vying for the four posts of vice chairman.

These four positions are seen as vital as they place the occupants closer to State House when the race to replace President Moi picks up later in the year.

President Moi has condemned the three officials who have sued the party, and announced that the Monday meeting will go ahead despite their challenge.
