The head of Senegal's fishery protection agency says all European fishing boats have now left the country's territorial waters, following the breakdown of talks with the European Union.

The collapse in negotiations came amid mounting concern over fish stocks along the West African coast.

Fish is one of Senegal's biggest foreign exchange earners, but in recent years increasing numbers of European and Asian trawlers have been targeting the waters to supplement their own catches.

EU and Senegalese officials said the talks foundered over Senegal's attempts to extend the area restricted to the local fleet.

Talks on an agreement may resume next month, but no date has yet been announced.
