| Thursday, 4 October, 2001, 17:44 GMT 18:44 UK Kenyan police given bail Prosecutors in Kenya have granted bail to six policemen who were charged with negligence after six prisoners were beaten to death in a jail in Thika, north east of the capital, Nairobi. The police officers, who deny the charges, were bailed on condition that they would not go anywhere near their place of work. The bail was set at $2,500 each. Three inmates at the jail have also been charged with the murders which took place on Sunday night. Police say the victims died during a fight in the cells but human rights groups in Kenya have accused the police of complicity in the killings.
