| Wednesday, 24 January, 2001, 07:47 GMT Zambia's greatest footballer retires Zambia's greatest footballer, Kalusha Bwalya, has announced his retirement, ending a twenty-one year career on the field. Kalusha was voted Africa's best player in 1988, and was a former Zambian captain. His most notable triumph was probably when he led a young Zambian side to the 1994 African Nations Cup final less than a year after a plane crash killed most of the nation's best players. Speaking from Mexico, the thirty-seven-year-old former PSV Eindhoven and Club America midfielder said that he'd rejected offers to continue playing beyond the current Mexican season which finished last month. He said he'd joined the coaching staff of the Second Division Mexican City side, Potros Marte. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
