1XTRA NEWS: THE REAL TALK OF THE STREETS
No sick pay: Is it fair?
Tesco supermarket
Are you up for the scheme?
Do you work in a supermarket?
Tesco wants to cut the number of sickies their staff are taking and now workers won’t get paid if they take a day off sick.

In a trial scheme, employees don’t get paid for the first three days they are off.

Real and fake sick leave together costs UK businesses £11bn every year – will Tesco’s scheme make a difference to that?
Have you chucked a sickie at work? Have you had to cover for people at work you know are off skiving? Have you got a better way to stop people pulling sickies?

Emsy
I think it's fair to not pay people sick pay for one day off, I'd still pull a sickie coz I wouldn't expect to get paid anyway. I've only pulled one sickie and it was worth not earning the money. I do think it will encourage people not to do it so often though.

Jules
I work for tesco and I think it sucks!!! They won't get away with it.

rosie
that is so so harsh. If they dont give you pay they could at least send you like a sick hamper with soup, and crusty bread, a flu remedy, juice, etc.

If you are not working in a happy, healthy environment it is not a surprise people are off sick all the time. I have not gained any new skills apart from moaning about people constantly. Who wants to work in that environment..? It is not worth the stress... i'm leaving.

Rocky Rich
Skiving sucks anyway you have to hide in your house so why bother? If you cant deal with yer job... quit! Find something you enjoy doing and you will be jumping out of bed in the morning. Genuine sickness should be acceptable to all but I don't consider a cold to be a sickness. So stop whining and get to work!! If you don't think you're fit to be at work go see a doctor and show me the sicknote.

I run a factory and have had to do the same as Tescos recently. I previously gave my staff a certain number of days off a year but it was abused. Certain people always took the exact number of paid sick days available with others taking none or hardly any. It's not fair on poeple who are genuinely ill so I pay on a discretionary basis.

David
I have worked for tescos for nearly two years. I have no issues with the scheme. I see it as a benefit because more people will be at work. The sense of guilt that you feel for letting your colleagues down will also be lost because they know that people will be more genuine in their sickness. Their existing sickness policy is also very fair and this will only build on it's foundations.

I work in tescos and recently had to take the weekend of but i was genuinely sick and yes when people are sick it makes it harder on everyone else but what if your relying on getting a certain amount of money each month and cant exactly prevent being sick. i think tesco's are making enough money, more than any other supermarket, to pay sick pay, just like all the other supermarkets do.

I will just have to take more days off sick at a time! Make sure i take sick leave to go on holiday, instead of using my paid holidays

Jason Kitson
Tesco's new scheme is dressed up as a means of supporting staff who feel they are let down by absent employees. Rather than find the money to cover absent positions, Tescos have devised a plan that will save them money and not address the real issue at all. I wonder what Tescos do to promote good health amongst their staff.

Miss Clarke
I'm sure that people who pull sickies often work in a tedious work enviroment. Although we are paid to work it would help if they introduce a incentive scheme for attendence every year/6 months.

Kane
nah i'd still pull a sicky....

Peterkins
I don't want to be served food by a member of staff with a streaming cold. It would affect where I shopped.

Nicola West
The way that Britains working industry is means that sickies are inevitable. With the longest hours in Europe people need to be able to take a day off when they feel they require it without forfitting financially. It is an important part of treating workers holistically. It may cost businesses billions of pounds but even computers are falliable and it is a cost which must be accounted for. They still make huge profits, such a scheme should be illegal.
