1XTRA NEWS: THE REAL TALK OF THE STREETS
Too old to have a baby?
Adriana Iliescu at seven months' pregnant
This is the oldest mum on record. She had a baby on Sunday and she's 66 years old.
Kids' author Adriana Iliescu spent nine years taking drugs to stop the menopause, and got pregnant by an anonymous sperm donor.

When her daughter is 16, she'll be 82 but Adriana says it's every woman's right to give birth no matter what age.

"A woman at grandmother age shouldn't be having children... the sisterhood has been let down when women can't accept the natural stages in their life" says campaign group Comment on Reproductive Ethics.
Is all new life a good thing? Or should women give up on conceiving a baby after a certain age?

Grace
If this woman was so desperate to be a mother, why not adopt an older child? No-one has a right to give birth. It is a great privilege, but not a right.

stephanie
its not right to judge people when you dont know the full story. but unfortunately this story does not concern only her but a child which had no choice in the matter. she must ask herself if she as a teenager would have wanted to have an eighty-year-old mother. my mum was 30 when she had me and she still found it difficult to cope with me when i entered my teens... even though i was her third child. for nature to stop allowing people to have kids at certain ages, it means that neither men nor women should try to play God.

Anna
My mother was 42 when I was born, my father 49. I suffered thinking I would lose them. I did but 45 years later. It is a huge burden for the children of older parents.

nathaniel
Ok fair enough we've all done the maths but to come on now, 9 years of taking pills and averting nature is enough of a sign that all is not right here. There is no father and to add to this its most likely that she will become very poorly at a very young and important stage of the childs life. In years to come i think this will be devastating on the child and its unfortunate that this woman has been so inconsiderate.

punam
its a wonderful time for her, she has fulfilled her dream... Age has no limits, in life people look for happiness, she has found hers, and i am sure that there is nothing else she would ask for...but for the world to let her and her baby lead a lovely life together, for as long as they can. I wish her every success in the future, and a beautiful life for her child.

syma
i believe that its quite sad that a woman of this age has forced her body to give birth, by taking prescribed drugs. what about when the child is at school all his/her friends will think its mother is its grandmother. not only that but no matter how fit can a 66yr old body cope with the stress and strain of raising a child especially the toddler stages and also the teenage yrs, hoping that she lives long enough to experience this. i wish them both all the best as they are going to need alot of physical help and emotional support.

Amirah
It is selfish of her to have a baby at her age, but no more selfish than it is for a man to become a father at that age. And I don't think you can argue it's "unnatural" either because how many women of "normal" child bearing age use drugs and other technologies to get pregnant? Isn't that unnatural too?

eleni
Why the woman has done this i do not know and everyone is saying it's sick because it's never happened before. It's her decision with she wants to have a baby and no one elses!! It's different but surely isn't sick. Having a baby is why god put us girls on the planet and if she's only doing her job, why insult her? It cannot be reversed so Adriana will have to do her best to raise this child. I hope her and the baby have all the happiness in the world together!!

AGA
This is creepy. Women should have access to health security, recieve good care for their children, equal salary for the same work done and general legal protection as the next man would get. But this example here is definitely no way of furthering equal rights. So what if a 72 year old man can inseminate a 25 year old woman? Women shouldn't try to be identical to men. Thats not equal rights!!

letty
My mates dad was 60 when she was born and nobody said he was too old or being selfish. Guess its one rule for men and another for women!! Oh and my mate and her dad are closer than any one else I know.

nicole
Personally I'm disgusted at this lady. in my opinion she doesn't have any consideration for anyone but herself. she has had a child for all the wrong reasons.

Peter
I am suprised that no one has thought about how the child socialises when her parents are more than double the age of his friend's parents... could lead to psychological difficulties. Of course, every life is unique and who is to say that this child will not have have a fulfilling life? There are, of course, other people who lose parents while themselves young who go on to lead successful lives.

MAGGIE
I THINK THIS LADY DOESNT WANT TO ACCEPT NATURE.. HER TIME IS UP....WHY IS SHE TRYING TO CHANGE NATURE. WHOSE GONNA TAKE CARE OF THE CHILD...OR IS THE CHILD GOING TO TAKE CARE OF HER MOM???

Sarah Springham
I find the nature of this debate offensive and sexist. Men who fertislise women at the age of 70 + are given a slap on the back and a few drinks on the boys for being macho. If a woman wants to have a child when, in theory, she won't be alive to see it into its late teens, she is treated as a freak.
Age is no barrier to death - a 25 year old mother could just as easily die. Adriana is an intelligent woman who has weighed up the pro's and con's and made a difficult and painful decision, not only for herself in terms of medical procedures, but also for the child. I think we should wish them both the best for a happy future together.

Its not fair on the child at all, not saying she will be a bad parent as im sure she'll do her best but it wont be long before the child ends up being her carer, or being put into care because her mum is too elderly to look after her. Inevitably the child will become an orphan at an early age as she has no father either.I just hope the woman has other family who is able to support the child too.

Leticia
The woman is being really selfish, its all about her needs and what she wants. She's old enuf to be the baby's great granmother, she has no real consideration for the poor child, she's just doing it cos she missed out 30/40 years ago (cos she chose career over family, so its her own fault anyhow). She probably wont even be around for the child's 10th bday. I pity the baby, being brought into the world by some1 who is 66 years old and being likely to go into care

stef
i don't think this is fair on the child but then again 'it' doesn't know any different does it really? lets just hope the child enjoys its life eh? thnx xxx

laura
i think it is so selfish of her to have a baby at this age. the baby will have no parents while growing up and it is going to have a very lonely life it is REALLY selfish of her to do this... but yet on the other hand if you have never had a baby when do u stop trying

Rhonda
I say don't judge someone until you walk in their shoes. All these woman who are judging her harshly can probably have kids of their own. If they could not, how would they feel? Do they have the guts to do what this woman has done and suffered what she has? Just because a woman is young is no guarantee that she will be a good mother.
What about the young mother in America who drowner her two boys to be with her lover? As for her dying when the child is young? Walk out the door on any day and even a young mother can die. What this woman lacks in age, can be made up in some ways by the richness of her life and experiences. Hey, all you need is love right?

Denise Wilson
She's far too old. It's just unnatural.

paris
its wrong that kid will be picked on but at the same time she is willing to love this child i feel sorry for the kid when its in its teens it will be a tuff life cos its getting worse

sad and sick but same time very hapy for her if that is what she wants she had nine years of that treatment be happy for her

Shareen
I think its good that the lady's dream has come true to have a baby but i think its wrong that she is old and could die and the kid could be left with no family and at a school it can be tough not having no one. I just hope the kid knows what to expect and the mum thinks about bringing it in to the world not knowing when she'll die.

gemma and lisa
thats sick by the time the kid is about 30 years old her mam will be 100 years old

Lee
Fair enough if her body is happy to get pregnant but she had to take drugs for 9 years to force her body into this and I don't think that's right. Shes getting older and there's no guarantees how long shes got left, the child could end up without any parents before they even leave school and that's one of the worst times for someone to have that happen to them.
