What's a soundclash?

A soundclash is a head-to-head competition in which teams of DJs compete over a number of rounds to prove that they are the best selectors, by playing the hottest tunes, the biggest crowd-pleasers and the heaviest bangers.

The audience at the clash decide which team triumphs simply by reacting to the tunes being played. If the venue erupts when a team drops a tune, they are likely to win. If they clear the floor, their team is going out. Simple.

Soundclashes originated in Jamaica at reggae dancehall events but have since evolved to encompass many different genres of music. DJs often use specially-recorded versions of tracks (dubplates) to gain an extra advantage.

The BBC Radio 1Xtra Summer Soundclash was decided over a number of themed rounds, and comprised 3 teams of BBC Radio 1Xtra DJs accompanied by their Radio 1 counterparts and some of the biggest names in UK black music.
