What is a soundclash?

A soundclash is a head to head competition between teams of DJs, in which these teams compete over a number of rounds to prove that they are the best selectors, by playing the biggest tunes and the heaviest bangers. DJs often use specially recorded versions of tracks, (dubplates) to gain advantage.

Soundclashes originated in Jamaica at reggae dancehall events but have evolved to encompass different genres of music. The audience at the clash decide which team triumphs by reacting to the tunes dropped. If the venue erupts when a team drops a tune, they are likely to win. If they clear the floor, their team is going out. Simple.

The BBC Radio 1Xtra Soundclash will be decided over 3 rounds, and will be comprised of 3 teams of BBC Radio 1Xtra DJs accompanied by their Radio 1 counterparts and some of the biggest names in UK black music.
