Flight's DJ Tips

1Xtra's DJ Flight

"Becoming a successful DJ isn't easy. The road to big things can often be a rocky one, but my tips from the top should help you on your journey..." - DJ Flight

It's all about pitch
A lot of people say mixing isn't the most important part of DJing but you do need a balance of tight mixing and tune selection. Nobody likes to hear a "clangathon" in a club. Seamless mixing makes all the difference to a set. Also you should never have to touch the platter. The pitch control is there for a reason, make use of it!

Don't be afraid to play the music you love
Originality goes a long way and it gets you noticed so come with your own style and flavour. Think of it like this; if you sound like other people why would a promoter want to book you?

Practice makes perfect
Take your time and don't rush things. Send/give out demos when you know you're at a high enough standard to follow through properly. If it is your fate to make it as a DJ you will get there. It's a very long process so don't give up if things don't happen straight away.

Make as many contacts as you can
Be seen in the clubs, talk to promoters and become a familiar face to the right people. It's not just about how well you can put a set together. You still need someone with a certain amount of authority to give you the right break.

Enjoy it
Being a DJ is one of the best jobs in the world. Don't be jaded and think you can come into this just to make some quick kish-kash, there's a very tall ladder to climb. If you're in it for the love of the music, DJing can be very rewarding and fulfilling.
