1990 - Nelson Mandela is released from Victor Verster Prison, near Cape Town, South Africa, after 27 years behind bars.

1996 - Tupac is shot four times in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas, and died six days later of respiratory failure and cardiac arrest at the University Medical Center.

1997 - Biggie is killed by an unknown assailant in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles, California.

1997 - The Labour Party wins the general election by a landslide, leaving the Conservative Party in tatters after 18 years in power.

1990 - Paul Gascoigne sheds a tear or two after England's defeat to Germany in the semi-finals of the World Cup.

1995 - Manchester United's Eric Cantona is fined £20,000 and banned from playing football over his kung fu-style attack on a fan.

1996 -The UEFA European Football Championship (Euro 96) was hosted by England.

1997 - Mike Tyson regains part of his heavyweight title, before losing it to Evander Holyfield in 1996 by an 11th round TKO. Their 1997 rematch ended in disqualification for Tyson after he bit off a portion of Holyfield's ear.
