Question and Answer
I'm a 21 year old female with a great interest in being an MC on a radio station.

I have a very distinct and unique voice, and an outgoing personality. I can select music and have a good ear for urban but I can't DJ. What would be the best way of getting on to a show or starting one?

Radio presenting is definitely more about personality and voice as opposed to just being a great DJ, so you're cool on that score.

Its worth having a good professionally recorded showreel, demonstrating your voice, outline of your show ideas and straight up reading of a piece of text. Employers would be interested in the way you vocally 'link' two tracks together.

Find a good reputable company to do the demo with (check the music press eg. DJ mag) and make it clear that your objective is to leave with a good demo.

You can then shop this around to stations. Experience is a great help and you need to get some, be it via pirate stations, hopital radio or whatever.

Be prepared to get into a station doing any job you can and work your game from the inside. It's always much easier once you're on board.

1xtra has a show called 'Xcess Talent' which is all about new presenters being given a chance and is well worth sending your showreel to. Check online for show details.
