Question and Answer
I have found a wicked venue and have my DJs lined up. Can you give me some guidelines on making my club night heavy?
Back to FAQs list

Seriously, you really need to promote this thing as hard as you possibly can to your relevant audience. Find out how they find out about other other gigs and cover the basics. Stuff like flyers, radio (be it pirate or legal ... oops!) and the press. The music press inparticular that deals with your audience. I don't know what kind of music you're promoting but if it's drum and bass for example, you need to go with Knowledge. Them kind of magazines.

Text messages are really big these days. Basically, just text your whole phone book and get them to come down. Don't forget your e-flyers. That's the quickest way to get your flyers out there - just e-mail them to your entire database. If you can find yourself a database of clubbers from anyone you know, that'll be a good look as well.

Do make sure you pre-check your sound system before start each night and back it up if necessary. Do the basics, mics, jumpy needles, monitors... stuff like that. There's nothing worse than a wicked promotion and there's a technical hitch. Every DJ hates that.

Have a nice word with the security. Tell 'em you're their boy and they need to look out for your kind self. You don't want no gangsters on the door. Anyone too harsh on the door - you need to speak to the management about that one quickly. Organise your guest list. Get someone to meet and greet, and get your special guests in neatly. Especially DJs! We DJs need to get ourselves and our record boxes in quick - some venues search DJs up and down.

And also get out fast as well. If you are going to pay in cash on the night, have your contingency cash in your pocket, don't rely on money coming in from the till. With the Dance thing. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Make sure your DJ's dough is in your pocket from early. That's if you're not paying them in advance of course.

And what can I say? Good luck to you Mr. Big in Sheffield. I hope all goes well and the best thing you can do under the circumstances is book the 1Xtra DJs like myself. We'll come down and smash it for you no problem. All you have to do is link up and ask!
