Around 50 protesters have stormed the Interior Ministry in Bangkok and attacked government vehicles, shortly after a state of emergency was declared in the Thai capital.

Thai news reports say the group of anti-government protesters were looking for the Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, who allegedly escaped by car shortly after the break in.

Soldiers initially made no effort to stop the protesters from breaking in but soon fired shots in the air to prevent more protesters from joining, according to Reuters.

Protesters also climbed on a tank and waved flags.
