Going down a storm

Titanic, the most expensive film ever made, has hauled in 14 Oscar nominations, the highest number for more than 45 years.

Titanic has been nominated for the key categories of best director (James Cameron), best actress (Kate Winslet), best supporting actress (Gloria Stuart) and best cinematography by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The last time a film had as many nominations was in 1951 with All About Eve. The most Oscar wins for a single film is held by Ben-Hur, with 11 in 1959.

Also in the running for best picture are As Good As It Gets, The Full Monty, Good Will Hunting, and LA Confidential.

British actresses will headline on Oscar night after receiving all but one best actress nomination. Helena Bonham Carter, Julie Christie, Judi Dench and Kate Winslet are all up for the award for their films Wings of the Dove, Afterglow, Mrs Brown and Titanic. American actress, Helen Hunt, has also been nominated for As Good As It Gets.

Best actor

Competing for the title of best actor are Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting, Robert Duvall in The Apostle, Peter Fonda in Ulee's Gold, Dustin Hoffman in Wag the Dog and Jack Nicholson in As Good As It Gets.

James Cameron, the driving force behind the $200m Titanic, has been nominated for best picture as well as best director. He did not receive a nomination for best film script.

Best director

For the directing Oscar, Cameron is up against Peter Cattaneo for The Full Monty, Gus Van Sant for Good Will Hunting, Curtis Hanson for LA Confidential and Atom Egoyan for The Sweet Hearafter.

Four films were nominated for four Oscars each - Amistad, The Full Monty, Kundun and The Wings of the Dove.

Some of the summer's box office successes pulled in nominations, including Men in Black, with a total of three, and Con Air and Air Force One, both of which had two nominations.

Mrs Brown, a film about the life of Queen Victoria after the death of the Prince Regent, starring Judi Dench and Billy Connolly received two nominations.

Although the British blockbuster The Full Monty is mentioned in four categories, its star, Robert Carlyle, has missed out on a personal nomination.
