Students' unrest spreading to Senegal's capital

Student unrest in Senegal have spread to the capital Dakar, where protestorshave burned government-owned vehicles and ransacked a cabinet minister's home.

Authorities say nine youths were arrested when students took to the streets to protest police handling of unrest that broke out last week in the northern town of St Louis.

The students say nine people there were shot and wounded when security forces opened fire during campus violence.

Students also clashed with police in the central town of Kaolack.

The Senegalese authorities said the forces used only teargas to disperse the students ---who were protesting over electricity cuts.
