The West African state of Gabon is now waiting for the outcome of Sunday's vote on whether to extend President Omar Bongo's rule - over thirty years after he first came to power.

It was Gabon's second multi-party presidential election, and President Bongo is favourite to win.

Turnout was reported low and there were problems at polling stations, but there were no reports of any serious violence.

First results are not expected until later this week, and if no candidate gains more than fifty per cent of the vote, a second round may be held later this month.
