Opposition parties in Senegal have called on President Abdou Diouf to give a full explanation of the role of the country's army in Guinea Bissau.

In a joint statement, they said the Senegalese intervention in Guinea Bissau was unpopular and could affect stability in Senegal itself.

Senegal sent an estimated two-thousand troops to help President Vieira overturn the month-long mutiny by rebel soldiers which was triggered by the sacking of the army chief, Ansumane Mane.

Senegal intervened after General Mane was accused of supplying arms to Senegalese rebels in the Casamance region.
