The leader of the Senegalese Democratic Party, Abdoulaye Wade, insisted he would contest the results, by seeking a ruling from the Constitutional Court. The results gave the governing Socialist Party of President Abdou Diouf -- which has been in power since independence in 1960 -- ninety-three of the one-hundred-and-forty seats in parliament. Mr Wade's PDS party received twenty-three seats while the new Democratic Renewal Movement gained eleven seats. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
