The Australian teenager never got going was eventually beaten 6-3 6-2 7-5 by his opponent, ranked 56th in the world. "I just had one of those days," said 19-year-old Hewitt. "I found the court very slippery and it did not suit my game today." "The whole time I still felt I had a chance of winning. I never doubted myself." Rhythm Hewitt, who beat Pete Sampras in the final of the Stella Artois Championship two weeks ago, was expected to do well at Wimbledon. But the seventh seed could not show any of his Queen's Club form and was disappointing as he failed to find any rhythm.
The match was not without its drama. Hewitt broke Gambill's serve for the first time in the match to go 3-1 ahead. The pony-tailed teenager even had two set points but Gambill saved them and broke back. Broken At 5-5 in the third set and 30-40 on Hewitt's serve, Gambill thought he had broken again to serve for the match but the umpire over-ruled a linesman's decision. Gambill did break Hewitt moments later. And after a nervous final game which went to deuce, he dumped out the ATP Champions Race third-ranked player. Hewitt refused to be too down-hearted, saying: "I think I am only going to get better and better at Wimbledon." | |
