Cymdeithas organised a rally in Carmarthen earlier this year |
Welsh language campaigners will suspend protests over plans to close up to 30 small schools in Carmarthenshire. They are to hold fire until the council publishes detailed reasons behind the changes towards the end of the summer.
Cymdeithas yr Iaith (Welsh Language Society) said the council clamied the publication would give people a fresh chance to comment or object to plans.
Carmarthenshire Council said its news supplement would be distributed across the county in the local press.
But is said it was still committed to its 110m education reorganisation plan although there would be further consultation under Welsh assembly government guidelines.
Representatives from Cymdeithas met with Carmarthenshire's education director Vernon Morgan on Monday.
Spokesman Aled Davies said: "We suspect that it might well be the council's intention to attempt to sell better their own ideas for closing village schools to a hostile public.
"However, we must take them at their word and we shall try to transform this initiative into the fully blown and county wide consultation about the whole future of education for which we asked."
Mr Morgan said the council had completed a draft timeline for changes in the county which would be presented to head teachers next month.
There would then be consultation on individual changes as well as a news supplement devoted to the issue.
"The council will continue with its work to improve the quality and range of opportunities to be made to all learners throughout Carmarthenshire."
Up to 30 schools could close in the county to make way for 19 new area schools as part of a drive to reduce surplus places and improve buildings which is also taking place in other Welsh counties.
