Wakeboarders from across the world will be in north Wales
A sell-out crowd of 20,000 is due on the Lleyn peninsula in north Wales this weekend for the Wakestock festival.

The event is in its sixth year and features wakeboarding - a version of snowboarding on water - along with a music festival.

Organisers are urging those who have not got tickets to stay away as none will be available on the gates.

Bands such as Feeder from Newport, The Zutons and The Automatic and DJ Carl Cox are playing.

Promoter Mark Durston said: "We have concentrated on building on the amazing vibe that Wakestock creates over the weekend, both on the water and at the music festival site, and are extremely excited about this years event."

Organisers said the festival attracts the biggest wakeboarding crowd in Europe.

The event will attract a record number of international wakeboarders from all over Europe, South Africa, USA and Australia to compete for the Wakestock title.

Wakeboarding is a water-borne version of snowboarding, with competitors performing jumps and turns while being towed by a speed boat.

Local councillor Wyn Williams said the skill needed to take part attracted professional boarders to the area.

"Its amazing to watch them, they have such a skill," he said.

When it began in 2000, the festival was held in the centre of Abersoch but it has now moved three miles (5km) out of the village to Penrhos.

Mr Williams added: "I'm glad it's moved because it has less of an effect on the actual village, but after saying that the whole event is run very well, and most people who attend stay at the festival site."

Bands this year include The Automatic, from Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan, whose debut album Not Accepted Anywhere is in the top 20 and who have a top 10 hit with the single Monster.

The Zutons and Feeder are also high in the charts with new albums.

Radio 1 DJ Bethan Elfyn is a regular visitor and will be presenting from the stage on Saturday evening.

"I think its great for north Wales that the biggest bands in Britain are going there to play," she said.

"Its a nice mix with people going to see the wakeboarding in Pwllheli on Saturday then going back to Penrhos in the evenings to watch the bands."

"This festival is the closest Wales has to 'T' in the Park with all sorts of bands taking part, and its always a shock to me when I realise how far people are travelling to be there," Ms Elfyn added.

BBC Radio 1 will record the event and broadcast it next week.
