Disposable nappies cost millions to dispose of |
A mini-mountain made of filled rubbish bags is being constructed in a seaside town in an attempt to show how much nappy waste one baby can create. Sustainable Wales has organised the stunt which it hopes will bring home to parents the impact on the environment disposable nappies can have.
It is spearheading a campaign throughout Wales to promote the benefits of reusable nappies - 30,000 nappies are thrown away here every hour.
The sculpture is being built in Porthcawl, south Wales, where the charity has its headquarters.
According to Sustainable Wales, disposing of nappies to landfill sites costs Welsh taxpayers an estimated 1.8m each year.
As well as building the nappy mountain, volunteers are also handing out information about nappy laundering services in the area.
Campaigners say real nappies save money |
Project officer Cindy Evans said: "Parents will be able to see for themselves the amount of waste created through the use of disposable nappies. "And we will be showing parents that they have a real choice when deciding on the type of nappy to use on their baby - real nappies are natural, easy to use of offer considerable savings."
The charity says parents can save up to 500 by choosing reusable nappies over disposables.
They estimate reusable nappies that will last the baby for its nappy-wearing life cost 70, which would only buy disposable nappies for 12 weeks.
"Even taking into account the cost of home laundering, which is about 50 a year, the savings are considerable," she added.
