A man who smashed more than 40 city centre shop windows, dressed only in his underpants is to be detained in a psychiatric hospital.

But Andrew Roxberry has been remanded in custody for a week until a hospital bed can be found for him.

Roxberry caused damage estimated at up to �75,000 to shops and business premises in Cardiff's Queen Street in February.

Wearing just a pair of black underpants, Roxberry attacked shop windows with a workman's shovel.

Among the 23 stores and businesses damaged by Roxberry were Boots, Etam, Marks & Spencer, Thomas Cook, BHS, Abbey National, Next, McDonald's and Gap.

The 30-year-old had earlier admitted 23 charges of criminal damage after being caught on CCTV.

Peter Davies, defending, told Cardiff Crown Court on Monday that as a result of two doctors' reports, it was possible to proceed with the case under the Mental Health Act.

Mr Davies said that would mean Roxberry, of Pentwyn, Cardiff, would be kept at hospital so that his condition could be monitored and appropriate treatments could be explored.

Judge Isabel Parry told him: "On the basis of medical opinion by two psychiatrists there is a recommendation that a placement in a hospital is the appropriate sentence."
