Reinstated Deputy First Minister Mike German has refused to comment on speculation about his future role in the Welsh assembly cabinet.

Speaking on BBC Wales on Friday, he would not discuss suggestions that he is tipped to take over the rural affairs portfolio from Carwyn Jones.

He resumed his role as number two in the assembly on Thursday, following news that an investigation into his past business dealings had been dropped.

He stepped aside as Rhodri Morgan's deputy - and as economic development minister - last July, when South Wales Police began investigating allegations involving Mr German's previous role as head of the European Unit of the Welsh exam board, the WJEC.

The Crown Prosecution Service has now decided there is insufficient evidence to press criminal charges.

He had always denied any wrong-doing.

Mr Morgan told AMs of his reinstatement on Thursday, announcing he would immediately resume his duties as deputy first minister.

Mr Morgan has promised a cabinet reshuffle within a matter of days, and has indicated that Mr German will be given "a major role".

But, asked about rumours of taking over rural affairs, Mr German said he and Mr Morgan had not yet had the chance for a full conversation, and added :"I think it would be wrong to speculate."
