Timetable: Road to the polls | | This is the timetable for the election campaign after Tony Blair set polling day for 5 May. TUESDAY 5 APRIL
Tony Blair announces he has asked the Queen to dissolve Parliament ready for 5 May election. THURSDAY 7 APRIL
MPs and peers stop sitting in Parliament, which continues to exist until it is formally dissolved. MONDAY 11 APRIL
Parliament is dissolved. It means there are no longer any MPs, although ministers keep their jobs during the poll campaign. The election writs which formally set the poll date are issued. TUESDAY 12 APRIL
Local returning officers receive election writs.THURSDAY 14 APRIL
Notice of election has to be published by 1600 BST.
TUESDAY 19 APRIL
Deadline for delivery of nomination papers/withdrawals of candidature/appointment of election agents at 1600 BST. Nominations announced at 1700 or as soon as any objections settled.
TUESDAY 26 APRIL
Last day for receipt of late applications for people who cannot reach a polling station and want to vote by proxy or post (deadline 1700 BST).
TUESDAY 3 MAY
Last day for the appointment of polling and counting agents.
THURSDAY 5 MAY
Election day, with polling stations open between 0700 and 2200 BST.
