1970: Shock election win for Heath

On the 19 June 1970 Edward Heath became the new British prime minister after a surprise victory for the Conservatives in the general election.

As he walked into Number 10 he had a tin of red paint thrown over him.

Heath, who had led the Conservative party since 1965, pledged to "restore honesty to government and integrity to politics."
