Mr Brown, who usually holidays in Cape Cod in the US, said his family break would be spent in England and Scotland.

He told the BBC he was looking forward to playing tennis, watching football and reading some books.

Former PM Tony Blair was known for exotic trips such as a stay at Sir Cliff Richard's Barbados villa and Bee Gee Robin Gibbs's Florida mansion.

Mr Brown, who took over as prime minister last week, was asked what he would be doing for his summer break.

He told BBC One's Breakfast programme: "I will be holidaying here at home actually.

"We have got two very young children and I'm looking forward to a relatively quiet holiday at home, part of it in England, part of it in Scotland."

"Perhaps a chance to play some tennis, perhaps a chance to watch some football matches, perhaps a chance to read some books."

Mr Brown has warned anyone planning to fly abroad they face a summer of delays at airports following recent terror

"It's going to be very difficult for people," he told Breakfast but he said travellers needed to know they would be safe in crowded places.
