Boxing Day bargain hunters have queued for hours as the post-Christmas sales got into full swing. In London, shoppers waited for four hours before Selfridge's opened with reductions of up to 50%. By 1000 GMT more than 5,000 sales were recorded.
It comes after retail analysts Footfall said 18% fewer people shopped on Christmas Eve than last year.
However, Friday saw almost one-fifth more business than the equivalent day last year.
In Manchester, managing director of the John Lewis store Maggie Porteous said: "It's the first time a John Lewis has ever been opened on Boxing Day ... I guess it's a sign of the times.
"We had 7,500 cars parked in our car park before we'd even opened this morning.
"It's very hectic, everyone's busy."
In Birmingham, shoppers began queuing at 0700 GMT outside the Bullring and more than 26,500 people had visited the centre by 1100 GMT - 6% up on last year.
