Mr Blair also turned on the Dome's critics saying it is "time to stop the carping and start getting behind a great national endeavour". But is the 758m being spent on the Greenwich project value for money or is the dome on track to become an expensive white elephant? A recent survey by Mori suggests that the public thinks ending Third World debt is a more worthwhile way to spend the money earmarked for the Millennium project rather than constructing a dome which is not expected to stay standing for more than a couple of decades. Or is the Prime Minister right when he says the eyes of the world will be focused on the Greenwich Meridian, the home of time, when the clock strikes midnight on 31 December 1999. Other similar projects like the Festival of Britain in 1951 and the Great Exhibition a hundred years earlier both attracted their share of criticism at the time but were later hailed as resounding successes. So will the dome follow their example or will it be quite simply a fantastic waste of time and money? Why could they not have staged a more informative exhibition in the Dome, instead of creating just another theme park? I think this Millennium Dome will be a great symbol for the year 2000... How can the UK justify the obscene expense of what will be no more than a vulgar eyesore ... | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
