1982: Joins hometown side Liverpool, but after two seasons, fails to make a first team appearence. 1984: Joins Wigan where he scores 35 goals in 137 games. 1988: Signed by Bradford for �80,000 and scores 56 goals in 269 games. 1996: Appointed reserve team manager at Valley Parade. 1998: Succeeds Chris Kamara as manager 1999: Guides the Bantams to promotion into the Premiership in his first full season as manager. 2000: Helps Bradford to avoid relegation from the Premier League on the last day of the season.

But the Hillsborough board have opted for Jewell's proven ability to mastermind a promotion campaign from the First Division.

Jewell quit as Bradford manager over the weekend, but Richmond initially refused to accept his resignation and placed him on paid leave.

Richmond was determined that Bradford would not miss out on compensation for Jewell, who had two years left on his contract at Valley Parade.

Former Wimbledon manager Joe Kinnear was the long-time favourite to take the post at Hillsborough, but he later ruled himself out.
