Double Derby joy for Sinndar
Sinndar
Sinndar was in a class of its own
Sinndar completed the a memorable double by winning the Irish Derby at the Curragh.

The triumph in Ireland comes after the combination of Irish trainer John Oxx, jockey Johnny Murtagh and Sinndar won the Epsom Derby last month.

Two Aidan O'Brien trained horses, Glyndebourne and Ciro, came home in second and third place respectively - more than six lengths behind the winner.

The race promised to feature a battle between 2,000 Guineas champion King's Best and French Derby winner Holding Court.

The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is the obvious race for him now.

Trainer John Oxx

The early betting seemed to favour Holding Court - but backing for Sinndar soon pulled through and the punters' faith was repaid in full.

Trainer Oxx was delighted with the win but slightly worried with the way his horse had began the race.

"He was racing lazily and on the home turn Johnny was scrubbing along a bit but he said he always thought he had plenty in the tank," said Oxx.

"He's probably improved from Epsom and he's probably still on the upgrade. The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is the obvious race for him now."

Ciro, ridden by Michael Kinane's replacement George Duffield, took up a position at the front of the field from the start.

Race favourite

Raypour, the 200-1 outsider, decided to take the lead from the start and played an imporatnt part in setting the pace for fellow Oxx horse Sinndar.

As the race approached the halfway stage the much-fancied King's Best was pulled up by jockey and five-time Irish Derby winner Pat Eddery because of a leg injury.

And with Holding Court looking unlikely to make a charge for the front it was up to Murtagh and Sinndar to take the Curragh's prize race by the scruff of the neck.

With three furlongs remaining the race favourite burst from the outside to take the near rail, leaving the rest of the field in its wake.

Glyndebourne bravely tried to keep up but it was Irish joy all round at the Curragh - and by some considerable margin.
