| Monday, 5 June, 2000, 15:03 GMT 16:03 UK British champ leads Tyson undercard ![]() Jason Rowland fronts the Mike Tyson undercard at Hampden A strong undercard has been announced for the controversial fight between Mike Tyson and Lou Savarese at Hampden Park on 24 June. Second to the main event will be British champion Jason Rowland's challenge of American Zab Judah for the IBF World Super-lightweight title. A number of Scots boxers are also on the card for what will be one of the biggest nights in Scotland's boxing history. The event is certain to be staged before a sell-out 60,000 crowd in Glasgow, despite widespread protests against Tyson, a convicted rapist, being allowed into the country.
But Rowland also has the big time in his sights with 24 wins from 25 fights. He successfully defended his British title with a fifth-round stoppage of Jon Thaxton at Bethnal Green in November. Rowland said: "It's great just being out there before Mike Tyson's fight, what more can you say? World champion "I've seen three of Judah's fights on video and the fact that he's world champion says it all, but I'll go out there to beat him. "He's there to beat. I'm training hard every day to make sure I'm ready for this fight and it can't come quick enough." Brixton's Danny Williams puts his Commonwealth and WBO intercontinental heavyweight titles on the line, while former WBC champion Robin Reid makes his return to the ring at super-middleweight. Scotland's Brian Carr has come out of retirement to fight following his Commonwealth super-bantamweight title points defeat to Australian Nadel Hussain at Glasgow's Kelvin Hall in March. Glasgow duo Barry Hughes and William Limond are also on the undercard in lightweight and super-featherweight contests respectively. Falkirk's Biagio Falcone faces a middleweight battle. |
