Two schoolgirls have fought in an amateur boxing match in Leicester after the contest was twice postponed because of a public outcry.

Emma Brammer, 14, from Stoke-on-Trent, beat Andrea Prime, 13, from Wigston in Leicestershire, in three rounds.

The match was held in front of a crowd of 300 in Leicester on Tuesday night.

In October last year Ms Brammer pulled out just hours before the bout because of widespread criticism of girls' boxing.

It was rescheduled two weeks ago, but was postponed again after the manager of heavyweight boxing champion, Lennox Lewis, described it as a "freak show".

The bout was one of 11 matches on the programme at Braunstone Working Men's Club - and Ms Prime's brother Glenn, 11, was also on the programme.

Ms Prime's boxing career started after going to watch her brother train at the club near their home in Leicestershire.

Their mother, Tina, said her daughter was "disappointed" with the outcome but would fight again.

"She enjoyed it and she's relieved it is all over because it took such a long time to get under way," she said.

"But she did really well last night and we are really proud of her. She's going to carry on training."

The British Medical Association has said: "Boxing can cause irreversible damage to the brain and eyes. The younger people start to box, the more liable they are to be damaged."

A ban on amateur boxing for women in the UK was only lifted last October.

The BMA has called women's boxing an "equal opportunity for access to brain damage".
