| Wednesday, 2 February, 2000, 10:36 GMT Lewis voted 'Fighter of the Year'
Britain's undisputed heavyweight boxing champion Lennox Lewis has been honoured by the Boxing Writers Association of America. He was voted "Fighter of the Year" for his two bouts against Evander Holyfield - the second of which unified his WBC title with the American's WBA and IBF belts.
Lewis adds the Edward J Neil Award to the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award he received last December. He was narrowly pipped last month for WBC boxer of the year by Mexican super-bantamweight Erik Morales. The first fight last March ended in controversy and bitter recriminations after being ajudged a draw. Lewis appeared to outpoint Holyfield by a clear margin, leading to speculation that the match had been rigged because American interests did not want to see a British fighter take the title. The re-match in November was a much different story as the Briton produce an efficient points victory to be crowned the last undisputed heavyweight champion of the millennium. There was further awards success for the Lewis camp, with Frank Maloney and Panos Eliades jointly winning the Al Buck Award for manager of the year. |
