Lee MacKensie: "Bobby-Jo makes Irish history"

The 10-1 shot and winner of last year's Irish National was ridden by Paul Carberry, and trained by his father Tommy, who rode the last Irish winner L'Escargot in 1975.

Half a dozen horses still had a chance at the final fence but it was the 10-1 shot who drew clear on the long run-in to beat Blue Charm (25-1), the mount of Lorcan Wyer, by 10 lengths.

Call It A Day, ridden by Richard Dunwoody, was a neck away third at 7-1 with Addington Boy (10-1) fourth.

'Fantastic ride'

Bobbyjo is owned by Irish London-based businessman Bobby Burke, who was elated with the triumph.

"I can't describe it, it's just fantastic," said Burke. "I'm delighted for Tommy Carberry, I'm happier for Tommy more than myself."

The quietly spoken trainer compared the victory with his own success as a jockey on L'Escargot.

"This is a lot, lot better," he said as he paid tribute to his son's riding performance.

"It was a fantastic ride he gave it."

The jockey leapt spectacularly from the horse at the race's end and then described the success as "a dream come true".

"We had a good start and were handy throughout," he said.

"He jumped very well and as we jumped the last I knew he would quicken.

"It can't get any better than that. It'll take a while to set in but it was worth going to bed at nine last night."

Double spiller

Blue Charm had led for much of the race, but finished second, after being overtaken in the closing stages.

The highly-fancied Double Thriller disappointed his many supporters by falling at the first fence.

Double Thriller was not actually the favourite come the start of the race, drifting out to 7-1 as the price of Fiddling the Facts was shortened to 6-1.
