Mike Tyson: Jail time guaranteed till June
News image
Mike Tyson's hopes of an early release from jail have been dashed after an appeal to reduce his sentence from a year to eight months were rejected

It means that the earliest the former heavyweight boxing champion could be released from jail is June.

Maryland state Judge Stephen Johnson has ruled that the original sentence is "fair and appropriate."

"This is a huge setback," Tyson lawyer Paul Kemp said.

The one year sentence is the result of Tyson having pleaded no contest to misdemeanour assault charges in connection with a minor traffic accident in Washington last August.

The boxer, who only returned to the ring in January after serving a one year suspension for biting Evander Holyfield's ear, is also serving an extra 60 days for violating probation for a 1992 rape conviction in the Midwestern American state of Indiana.
