Parents protest as schools close

The parents say the schools are an integral part of village life
News image
A rural council has voted in favour of a controversial plan to re-organise village schools despite protests from parents.

Pembrokeshire councillors have backed plans to close or merge five small schools in the Preseli area despite a demonstration by parents outside the meeting of the education committee.

During their meeting, councillors called on the National Assembly to ensure rural schools are adequately funded.

The parents protested last month, when the North Pembrokeshire education committee approved plans to close three schools and merge another two in the Preseli area.

They say the closures would set a disastrous precedent.

Education officers say any school with less than 57 pupils is not viable while parents say the schools are an integral part of village life.
