The saltire will fly on the Scotland Office building

London's Scotland Office building will be flying the flag for Craig Brown's boys who meet England in their Hampden Park head-to-head.

The Scottish saltire was last flown on a government building in England more than 100 years ago.

It will be on public display from the roof of Dover House, the London base of the Scotland Office, from dawn until dusk on Saturday.

A decision to hoist the flag was made as a show of support for the Scotland team who must beat England in a two leg play-off if they want to proceed to the Euro 2000 final.

Second leg

The saltire will also be flown again on Wednesday when the two teams meet at Wembley for the second leg of the qualifying tie.

Scottish Secretary Dr John Reid said: "I am looking forward to the match immensely and share every Scot's hope that we can go through to the Euro finals next year.

"But win, lose or draw, I hope that the excellent reputation of the Tartan Army will be maintained."

Another Scottish symbol expected to fly high on Saturday is the rampant Lion of red on a bright yellow background.

Along with the saltire, thousands of the red lions will be in colourful presence at the Hampden Park ground.
