| Hats off to wedding fashion The evening dresses added extra glamour to the occasion Prince Edward and his bride broke with tradition when they decided how guests should dress for their wedding.
They had also been asked not to wear hats - although a few women, including the Queen Mother - decided to wear them despite this request.
The Queen had a light wrap around her shoulders during the service - a change from the jackets she usually wears. Like some of the other female guests, she also chose to wear a headdress rather than leaving her head entirely uncovered.
The Queen Mother, who is rarely seen in public without a hat, wore a blue hat decorated with feathers to match her outfit. Princess Margaret and the Princess Royal both chose to wear simple feather headdresses.
The Prince of Wales caused some surprise by wearing a grey morning suit, instead of the traditional black jacket and striped trousers, which were worn by the bridegroom and the Duke of York.
