Supermarket plans get all clear

The Sainsbury's plans have been approved by the council

Plans for a major supermarket development in the Scottish Borders have been approved by councillors.

They unanimously backed plans by Sainsbury's for a superstore and petrol station on land at Pinnaclehill on the outskirts of Kelso.

However, rival firm Tesco could still submit plans of its own for the town in the next few weeks.

The Sainsbury's plan would also see the relocation of a number of businesses on an industrial estate extension.

It is the latest twist in a long-running planning battle between the two supermarket giants.

Sainsbury's already had outline permission to build a superstore in the town.

However, Tesco has been named by Scottish Borders Council as "preferred bidder" for land it owns which would be needed by the supermarket development.

SBC has suggested it may have to put the land up for sale again if no solution to the planning impasse can be found.
