The London bid was launched on Friday |
"Real opportunities" could be handed to Scotland if the Olympic Games come to London in 2012, it has been predicted. Glasgow's Hampden Park could host the men's and women's football tournaments and pre-games training facilities could be set up north of the border.
But most of the sporting events would be held in the English capital if the bid wins through.
First Minister Jack McConnell said Scotland could offer the Olympics "so much".
He added: "The London bid offers real opportunities for Scotland and I want to make sure we make the most of these.
"We can set up training facilities for athletes, Scottish companies can provide the goods and services that will run the games, and our young people will participate in the cultural programme that will set these games apart from every other.
"Winning the games will make sure that the Olympic spirit touches every part of the UK."
Scottish involvement emerged as London launched its bid, against eight other hopeful cities, on Friday in a high profile event at the capital's Royal Opera House.
Hampden's possible role in hosting the football event is likely to be shared with the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Old Trafford in Manchester, St James's Park in Newcastle, Villa Park in Birmingham and Windsor Park in Belfast. London, with Wembley, Wimbledon, Lord's and a brand new Olympic Park, would be at the heart of the games.
Under the plans, tourist landmarks in the city would be transformed with competitors descending on Hyde Park for the triathlon and road cycling events, Horse Guards Parade for beach volleyball and Regent's Park for baseball and softball.
The delayed new Wembley Stadium would host both the men's and women's football finals, while tennis matches would be held at Wimbledon.
Scotland would benefit economically from plans to create world class training facilities to be used for pre-Games preparation by many of the 200 competing teams and by taking part in pre-Olympic cultural and sporting events.
David Kells, managing director at Hampden Park, said he was delighted the stadium had been included in London's bid to host the 2012 Olympics.
He said: "Obviously we are delighted not only for Hampden Park but also for Glasgow in being asked to host and play a part in the football tournament.
"We hosted the Champion's League final in 2002 and are in the running for other finals and this assures the status of Hampden Park and the reputation that it has."
He added: "The attention that having the Olympics here would draw to Hampden and Glasgow would be great."
