Theo Walcott is a former Downs School pupil |
School Reporters at The Downs School have had an unforgettable day compiling news reports on their school's sporting heritage. The Berkshire students were assisted by Jonny Saunders, co-host of the Chris Evans breakfast show on Radio 2. He said: "We've had such a brilliant day. Everybody has had a lot of fun and we've all learnt so much." In keeping with the school's 50th anniversary, the School Reporters explored The Downs' great sporting alumni, including England football international Theo Walcott, and interviewed a fellow pupil ranked as Britain's second-best badminton player for his age-group. The breadth of reporting was unprecedented. The Year 8 journalists looked into the history of their mascot, Rory the Cat, in addition to producing current affairs pieces, such as a thorough investigation of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan. All of The Downs School's reporting was completed on time before the News Day deadline and can be viewed through the school's link on the BBC News School Report 'zoom and click' map.
