THIS WEEK I quake at the very idea of Old Etonians ruling the world again Johnny Vegas

Am I imagining things, or is everyone talking about class differences again?

I know there's been a load of funny people dressing up as toffs in Crewe and Nantwich and people talking about whether this is fair tactics, or bad tactics.

But will the issue of class prove to be a deciding factor in tonight's by-election?

I would hope so.

A chip on my shoulder

Whatever does happen in the by-election, we're still a class-ridden society. Class still matters in Britain today.

I'm from good working class stock in St Helens - up north - and it's fair to say that I've had a bit of a chip on my shoulder, even though I mix with these showbizzy rich folk types.

Yet I worry that it could be said that I've sold out my working class roots.

From the bottom to the top

I believe that Britain is becoming more class-conscious, and I quake at the very idea of Old Etonians ruling the world again.

I also believe one's social background is very important in Britain, and I think it's getting harder to move from the bottom to the top.

To an unreconstructed class warrior like myself, that's a frightening thing.
