This is a story of children and hope in a land laid waste by poverty and AIDS - the sub-Saharan nation of Swaziland. Impoverished children, with the help of surviving adults and local NGOs, are learning how to read and write in informal schools. In a country with a falling population and an economy in freefall, the children of Swaziland, against all the odds are battling for their future, taking control of their own fates. BBC Radio 4's Crossing Continents was broadcast on Thursday, 2 April, 2009 at 1102 BST and was repeated on Monday, 6 April, 2009 at 20:30 BST. Reporter and Producer: Bill Law
