| Monday, 23 July, 2001, 13:54 GMT 14:54 UK Megawati's acceptance speech: Text ![]() Megawati Sukarnoputri gave the following speech after being sworn in as president to replace Abdurrahman Wahid on 23 July. Beginning my speech accepting this post, please let me ask all of you to express thanks to God because only through His blessings, guidance, and protection were we able to obtain a solution to one of the important problems at the honourable MPR. In accordance with the existing mechanism and its authority under the 1945 Constitution, the MPR of the Republic of Indonesia today entrusted me with the responsibility as president of the Republic of Indonesia.
I took the oath of office as president in front of the honourable members of the assembly. I truly realise the duty that I will assume and the challenges facing me are not light. Deep concern I understand that efforts have to be made to enable us to get out of a crisis that has affected almost all aspects of national life over the past several years. I also feel the nation's deep concern over the situation. Like fellow Indonesians and the leadership and members of the honourable assembly, I feel tired and even note the growing loss of faith in the government's ability to settle the crisis.
In addition to a high degree of professionalism, discipline as well as strong and sincere cooperation are also necessary to settle them. A sense of togetherness and mutual assistance are necessary to shoulder the burden. Useful lessons Simultaneously, a better and more conducive political climate is also necessary to enable us to overcome the challenges. I closely followed the democratic and constitutional process prior to and during the honourable session. I have learned a very useful lesson about aspirations, a mandate, and the consequences of failing to carry out a post.
End differences This is the people's voice which we must uphold. In my opinion, respect for the people's voice, sincerity in accepting it, and respect for the rules of the game are the main pillars of democracy which we will further develop. I urge all Indonesians to look forward to the future and unite to improve the life and our dignity as a nation within our beloved unitary Republic of Indonesia. Let us end differences or conflicts which will only prolong the people's problems and sufferings. I thank the MPR for entrusting me with the responsibility as president of the Republic of Indonesia. Similarly, I express sincere thanks to my relatives and friends who have given moral support to me in carrying out my duties. May God the Merciful always give blessings and strength to all of us! Once again, let us build this nation. Let us build Greater Indonesia! Peace be upon you again!
