The scale of devastation caused by floods in Haiti and the Dominican Republic is becoming apparent.

The number of dead in the two countries, which share the island of Hispaniola, has been climbing all week and is now nearing 1,000.

People in the Dominican Republic are calling this the worst natural disaster to have affected their nation in the last 100 years.

Emergency officials say more than 13,000 people have been made homeless.

Some communities have been literally swept away by the floods...

...or by landslides, like this one which engulfed much of the Haitian town of Fonds Verettes.

Even churches have not managed to escape the deluge.

It is feared that many more victims still lie buried under the mud and the wreckage of homes.

Some emergency aid is making its way to the worst affected regions.

But no-one can be quite sure yet exactly what the final toll in terms of damage and human losses will be.
