| Thursday, 1 June, 2000, 16:24 GMT 17:24 UK Clough backs Phillips for England ![]() Brian Clough gives his verdict on England's stars Legendary former manager Brian Clough feels Kevin Phillips is England's best bet to score at Euro 2000. Clough, famously overlooked for the England manager's job in the 1970s, believes the Sunderland striker has the right profile to succeed on the European stage. He has also paid a back-handed compliment to England star David Beckham in a frank appraisal of his talents. "I'd throw Phillips of Sunderland in with Shearer," said the ex-Nottingham Forest manager. "He's a natural and he'll dip his bread at any level.
"I met him recently up at Sunderland. He smiled, called me `Mr Clough', so he's got some brains... unlike Beckham. "Mind you, being thick isn't an affliction if you're a footballer, because your brains need to be in your feet. "And Beckham works hard, he's brave and he crosses a ball superbly. "Beckham treats a football like he does a wife - lovingly, with caresses." |
